The laser for ROP is to ablate or "burn" the part of the retina that is not finished or has not vascularized.

This area of the retina, by ischemia or lack of oxygen, can lead to detachment of the retina.

The procedure is usually performed in the same neonatal unit where the baby is treated .

Duration
The procedure takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the state of the condition.

Postoperative

There must be a checkup one week after the procedure.

In some cases, it is necessary to repeat the treatment in another session.

Results expected
The laser does not cure ROP: it simply reduces the risk of retinal detachment disease.

Retinopathy of prematurity is a disease caused by immature retina, the neural tissue that covers the inside of the eye.

Retinopathy implies the absence of developed tissue and in some cases the presence of a fibrosis accompanied by retinal detachment.

This condition affects premature infants born with less than 1.5 kg at birth or before 32 weeks of gestation.
