Retinopathy of prematurity is a disease caused by immature retina, the neural tissue that covers the inside of the eye.

Retinopathy implies the absence of developed tissue and in some cases the presence of a fibrosis accompanied by retinal detachment.

This condition affects premature infants born with less than 1.5 kg at birth or before 32 weeks of gestation.

It uses local anesthesia and sedation with drops. Surgery is not painful.

The laser for ROP is to ablate or "burn" the part of the retina that is not finished or has not vascularized.

This area of the retina, by ischemia or lack of oxygen, can lead to detachment of the retina.

The procedure is usually performed in the same neonatal unit where the baby is treated .

Duration
The procedure takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the state of the condition.

Postoperative
Postoperative care involves using drops or ointment in the eye, for one week.Postoperative care involves using drops or ointment in the eye, for one week.

There must be a checkup one week after the procedure.

In some cases, it is necessary to repeat the treatment in another session.

Results expected
The laser does not cure ROP: it simply reduces the risk of retinal detachment disease.

Can the baby go blind?
Retinopathy of prematurity is a serious disease. The laser only prevents the detachment of the retina. If the detachment does not occur, there is a good prognosis for recovery of vision.
